Surgical
Cook Dentistry can accommodate most surgical procedures comfortably in office without an outside referral. However, Dr. Ryan Cook works with many experienced oral surgeons and specialists in the area should the need arise.
Tooth Extraction(s)
Dr. Ryan Cook has ample experience with tooth extractions. In most cases, x-rays are necessary prior to any surgical procedure like extractions. Some extractions are classed as simple, meaning the tooth can be elevated in one piece without removing any bone, and some are classed as surgical meaning that the tooth may need to be sectioned and removed in pieces. Dr. Cook will make this determination after a clinical examination and reviewing the appropriate x-rays. Regardless, local anesthetic is always used to insure the patient is comfortable through the entire procedure.
In some cases, an antibiotic is prescribed prior to an extraction, but isn’t always necessary. Post operative instructions are given to help avoid complications such as Dry Socket. Alveolar osteitis, better known as dry socket, occurs when the blood clot that normally forms at the site of the extraction fails to develop, becomes dislodged, or dissolves prematurely. In most cases, a dry socket will eventually heal on it’s own, but can be quite painful and prolong healing times.
Socket Preservation
Socket Preservation, or bone grafting, may be recommended in conjunction with tooth extraction(s). Our bone naturally begins to resorb once a tooth is removed. Bone grafting at the surgical site can help retain some of this bone post extraction, which can be especially helpful when placing implants or in preparation of certain restorations like bridges.
Dental Implants
There are many different name brands, sizes, and types of dental implants. A dental implant is basically a titanium posts with threads just like a screw. An implant is a great option for replacing a missing tooth or many teeth. Every patient’s needs are different, and the customizations with implants are vast, so it’s best to begin with a consultation to determine the best option for you. Implants are a two-step procedure. The first step involves the surgical placement of the implant. Dr. Cook is able to place the implant with local anesthetic in office. In some circumstances, he may refer to an oral surgeon or periodontist such as when medical conditions or other risk factors are present. The second step involves the restoration. Whether, you need a single implant supported crown, implant bridge, or implant supported removable denture, Cook Dentistry can coordinate your treatment from start to finish.
